The Lady with a Fan

Welcome to my blog, or back again if you’ve kindly visited before! This beautiful painting by Diego Velazquez of a young Spanish woman is important to the plot of my novel, The Harpist of Madrid. Juan Hidalgo, the main character of the book, sees this charming lady when his friend Velazquez is painting this portrait. He eventually falls in love with her and they become married. She is Francisca de Abaunza.

On display at The Wallace Collection, Manchester Square, London
